What I Learnt from President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jamhuri Day Speech – A Must Read

President Uhuru Kenyatta during Jamhuri day celebrations at Nyayo Stadium

In his Jamhuri Day speech, President Uhuru Kenyatta started well, by calling for unity amongst all Kenyans, in accordance with the vision of our forefathers, who fought for our independence. However, he lost me at the point where he turned the event into a Jubilee campaign platform and went ahead to cheat Kenyans that all our primary schools have been connected to electricity and supplied with tablets. White lie! Never mind that children were promised laptops not tablets.

He was also out of order to repeat the fallacious assertion that the ICC is a western powers tool aimed at manipulating African countries. His clear hatred for the ICC is purely hypocritical at a time when his next-door counterparts have been slaughtering their own people with utter impunity. Case in point; South Sudan, Uganda and Burundi. Yet there is always no African solution in sight, as the AU sits like a toothless bulldog.

His allegations that money is being poured into the country from foreign powers in order to destabilize his struggling gov't is pure propaganda aimed at soliciting sympathy from the public.

Finally, the president absolutely has no right to dismiss the opposition as "yale makundi mengine yanaeneza ukora." he must agree that the opposition has done its work of exposing the rot in his gov't and his fragile regime is likely to be swept out of power next year.

Only a highly disorganized opposition will fail to beat an incorrigibly corrupt gov't like that of Jubilee. The possibility of being the first one-term president in the history of this country is real and it must be giving president Kenyatta sleepless nights.
